Quilts and Patches

The Eagle Historical Society is pleased and proud of their new display of early American quilts. These quilts from yesteryear are for the most part hand-pieced  and hand-quilted. In addition there is an album of many and various patches. Come and see the intricate work done before rotary cutter and precise rulers and even sewing machines made the work so much easier.

In times past it was a common practice for women to gather at their respective churches for a day of quilting. Many of these quilts were donated to hospitals, children’s wards, servicemen and others who needed them. That practice still goes on today. Women still gather together to make quilts that they then donate to wherever there is a need. Not too long ago, a Whitewater guild joined with other Wisconsin guilds to piece quilts to give to the families of Wisconsin servicemen who died in the Iraq war. They were personalized with the individual’s name and service connection.  This is only one example of the charity work that quilters do, all in among their own personal quilting.
