Eagle Train Depot

22 April 2010

The times were exciting in Eagle in the 1850’s when the railroad built it’s track through Eagle Center.  Prior to that, the main center of activity was Eagleville, located along Hwy LO and Hwy E.  The coming of the railroad brought great opportunity for the farmers in Eagle and the surrounding area because it provided a way to ship their products to new markets

William Kline donated land in 1859 for the railroad to build a depot which put Eagle on the map.  The depot was located along the railroad tracks behind the current Eagle Fire Department and brought businessmen, families, tourists, and many others to and through Eagle for many decades.

Today we hear the train whistle as it roars through Eagle and wonder why it’s so loud, and why we have to stop at the crossing while the train passes; “Isn’t there a better way?”  But to the pioneers who built this area, that whistle was “music to their ears.”  It was the sound of progress, the sound of fortune, the sound of freedom of travel, the sound of adventure limited only by the imagination!

Take a look at the pictures we have of the train depot taken in the early 1900’s.  You will find them by clicking on the “Train Depot” link located on the right side of this page or click this link:  http://eaglehistoricalsociety.org/?page_id=499
