Description

The 40s: a Sentimental Journey by Various (CD, 2013)

Over seventy years ago, ordinary Americans rose to stop the brutality of the Axis and became the Greatest Generation—kids from farms and cities who built the Arsenal of Democracy and fought across the world. Their era was filled not only with Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, but with hometown and military bands whose music has been silent for decades. In 2011, the Palmyra‑Eagle Community Band revived these forgotten 1940s concert arrangements with The 40’s: A Sentimental Journey, honoring the 70th anniversary of World War II through songs once made famous by Dooley Wilson, Marlene Dietrich, Spike Jones, Judy Garland, and Bing Crosby. This collection brings listeners back to USO clubs, bond rallies, and the emotional sweep of 1941–1945—from “Remember Pearl Harbor” to “A Sentimental Journey”—as proudly presented under the direction of Mr. Ed Pierce.
