Share your perennials plants with friends and neighbors at a Plant Exchange on the new Patio at the Eagle Historical Society Museum. 217 Main Street, Saturday May 19 from 8:30 to noon. Bring  plants, take  plants. If possible identify your plants and indicate best  planting location. Bring additional plants to share with new gardeners or to be planted around the Patio at the museum. Meet Master Gardeners Nancy Manschot and Sandy Schwartz. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of events in the American Civil War, we would like to thank those who have contacted us with information about Eagle soldiers who served.  Much information about the William Logan family has been provided by descendant Jean Hren and her daughter Mary Oxaal.  William was one of the first from Eagle to enlist in the newly formed 1st Wisconsin Cavalry and was severely injured in a fall from his horse.  He was sent back home to heal and returned to serve with the 46th Wisconsin Infantry until the end of the war.  William married Mary Ackley and lived in Eagle most of their lives.  Their children and grandchildren served the community well.  William served as Eagle postman in his later years.

Corporal Silas Parsons served with Co A 24th Wisconsin Infantry and bravely fought off a blistering Confederate attack on the regiment at Chickamauga Georgia the afternoon of September 20 1863.  He was struck and killed by a musket ball that day.  Recently, we came in contact with a descendant who has been kind enough to share pictures of him, along with Civil War Letters.  We look forward to more conversations.

A descendant of Ferrand Bigelow is also sending pictures and other information on Elverton, William, and Franklin Bigelow; three Eagle brothers who served in the Civil War .  We look forward to sharing that with you.

Mike Rice, a member of the Eagle Historical Society, is writing a book about Company A 24th Wisconsin Infantry,  following letters written home to family members by two Eagle soldiers, Sidney P. Kline and George M. Logan.  Eagle sent nearly 100 men into the war effort between 1861 and 1865.  Names like:

News of the attack on Fort Sumter launched the Nation into a war that would last 4 years, and cost over 600,000 dead and more than 500,000 wounded.   In the weeks that followed the attack, President Abraham Lincoln called on state governors to recruit troops in the defense of Washington.  Over 100 young men from Eagle Wisconsin served the Union Army in defense of this Nation.

The Eagle Historical Society has several letters home from Eagle soldiers in the Civil War, which we will begin sharing with you over the course of the next several months.  Two Board Members, Mike Rice and Mark Dexter are writing a book titled

Using 14 letters home by Eagle soldiers Pvt Sidney P. Kline and Pvt George M Logan, who enlisted in the 24th Wisconsin Infantry, we will follow the men and their infantry unit through the war.  Be sure to check in regularly for updates.
