Vernette Heare Conference Room

19 November 2023

The Eagle Historical Society recently completed an addition to the museum which gave us a much-needed conference/meeting room on the first floor. Thanks to the generous contribution by Eagle Historical Society member, Vernette Heare, we were able to begin construction of a new ground floor meeting room.

Without her intitial donation, a new room would have been impossible. The new conference room was named the “Vernette Heare Conference Room” to honor her. That, along with the generous financial contributions of many other building fund donors, allowed us to build and complete this project.

A dedication ceremony was held on Tuesday October 10, 2023.

1941, Eagle Wisconsin (3)

13 November 2023

Britain had barely survived nearly four months of German bombings only a year earlier, and the war in Europe threatened to draw America into the battle.  But in Eagle, like many other small towns, kids started back to school in September 1941. Things seemed different though…

1941, Eagle Wisconsin (2)

The Eagle Quill February 14, 1941

February/March 1941 – The world seems to be in disarray as Germany, once again, is on the offensive in Europe and Japan has invaded China.

After invading Poland in 1939 and consolidating power in eastern Europe, Hitler turned his attention to France and England in western Europe.  France was defeated in 1940 and Germany was preparing to invade England.  America declared that it would defend England from any attack.

Meanwhile, back at home, life seemed normal.  Page 2 of our local newspaper, The Eagle Quill, had weekly articles about the latest fashions and sewing patterns available for 15 cents to those who wanted to make their own clothes.  Page 3 featured weekly recipes of sweets and dinners for hungry families.

But the reminder of looming war was always there.  A peacetime draft was enacted in 1940 where all men 21 – 35 years of age had to register for military service and called to active duty of needed.  It relied on a national lottery.

One young man, Harvey Wambold of Eagle, was saved from the draft when another man enlisted in his place.  But his freedom from the draft was short-lived because another man received a deferment, thereby requiring young Harvey to report for duty after all.

1941, Eagle Wisconsin (1)

The Eagle Quill – January 10, 1941 Page 1

It was January 1941, and the New Year brought with it great confusion and apprehension.  Though the U.S. was not directly involved yet, battles had been raging in Europe and China since 1939, conflicts that would lead to a global confrontation.

Our local Eagle Quill newspaper brought the news of the day to this small community, echoing the sentiment of our local and national leaders.  Read more about the build-up to WWII in the 1941 online editions of The Eagle Quill newspaper here on our website.
